Backyard Botany 2nd Pics

Mom ran out inbetween rain storms to get pictures of all the new blossoms. This crazy weather is making it hard to watch the growth but we captured it! Our apple trees do not seem to like this weather either and have almost no blossoms, so we'll see if we even get apples this year. Daddy says the trees have dormant years so we better read up on that too.

English helpers.

Super fun book that I found at Winners while browsing with the kiddos.

This book has tons of rhyming words for each letter of the alphabet, as well as poems throughout. Hmmm, and that reminds me, I should probably pick up some other tools such as a thesaurus and a dictionary.

Puzzles

Gemma has been puzzling. She is at the point where she can climb up to the craft cupboard and take down puzzles to do over and over. Keiran has started to join her. We have great memories of Aiden doing these puzzles- alot of them with Auntie Diane.

Concentrating.

Trucks of course.

Hmmmm. Is this the right shape?

First campfire.

We went for a walk after dinner and had some time before bed. We decided, spur of the moment, to make a campfire in the yard and roast some marshmallows for s'mores. This is the kid's first campfire experience....

Dad builds a fire (while mom runs to the gas station for supplies).

Kids waiting.

First try. After this he kept saying, "I want more cookie, Mom."

Taking it all in.

Dad did all the roasting. Now Mom wants a turn.
We told the kids that we could maybe "camp out" here in the big red tent this summer.

My favorite moment and picture. A father teaching his boy to roast a marshmallow for the very first time ever.

The kids learned a little about fire safety, asked about what the crackling was, tasted a yummy tradition, and had some great family time outdoors.

Oh Canada.

More snail mail has arrived. This is a free resource: https://www.donnaward.net/shop.php?area=item&sku=9780662475194&from=search&fromid=0

I thought it might be fun for the kids to find these symbols, such as provincial flags, around town.

painting and drawing

Our art books have arrived. I am scrapping one. It is not at all what I thought. I love this about homeschooling- that I don't have to use something because it is the set curriculum and can choose what's best for my son :) I will look for another drawing book. Here is the painting one that I am keeping:

Endless learning in our backyard.

We have started a little project.... we cannot share it with you yet. Maybe you will want to do one too....
We have started a book about our backyard. So far we took pictures of all of our trees and bushes (and some dandelions). We found a book at the library about all kinds of plants and we want to learn about what kinds are in our backyard. I think it is fun, even for mom. Great-Grandma can name all the plants when she comes to visit, and we want to learn and be able to do this too!
As we found the trees and took their pictures, I realized that there were lilac bushes and apple trees that will bloom and then even bear fruit. So, we will take pictures throughout the summer and then be able to finish up our book once the apples show up in full. Stay tuned..... :)

Here's a sneak peek.

Can anyone name this bush? We can't... yet;)
